Community

photography

In our April reporter meeting we discussed community and local history month; in particular the importance and meaning of community and what it looks like in our local areas. How transient housing can erode the feeling of community and the links between space, history and the feeling of belonging.

Here are our ‘community and local history’ photos:

Andrea’s photos:

Tess’s photos:

These are photos from a few years ago and are of the old bus station in the city centre of Stoke-on-Trent. I think it’s been knocked down now. But when these were taken it was where soup kitchens would go and people would bed down for the night. Images like this are what come to my mind when I remember Stoke (and how desperately glad I am not to live there anymore)

I'm Karen from Manchester it's great to meet you all. I'm a recovering alcoholic,
I experienced a short time of homelessness many years ago, I'm a survivor of domestic abuse and I'm happy to say I've come through it all.
I volunteered at a local Alcohol and Substance Abuse centre where I qualified as a Peer Mentor.
I now care for my elderly dad who is housebound and I feel blessed to be able and well enough to do this.
I hope as part of this Community Reporting team our stories can contribute to making a difference to homelessness and health inequalities and shine a light on any other injustices we come across.

  1. I really liked all this posts. Andrea’s photos are some evidence of community activities. Tess’s photos gives us an idea of what is happening in our communities presently. Homelessness is a social issue that is happening all over the country. I liked that statement very much, ‘..and how desperately glad I am not to live there anymore,’ and wish desperately, all the homeless people would be able to say this soon.
Karen’s video is so creative, that should inspire everyone to make a short video like this on any topics they might think of. I am paying my respect to all the contributors xx
