Recovery

Volunteering and Employment

Women's Perspectives

I love being a Volunteer Reporter for Groundswell it’s such an interesting and diverse role. There are so many things to get involved in like written, audio and video reporting, being part of podcasts, doing research, taking part in numerous zoom meetings with other charities and topics.

I really enjoy being able to give my time freely it is so rewarding and gives me a sense of purpose. I used to have a good career, I thrived under pressure and ran on adrenaline, but my alcoholism cut that short. So, once I got into recovery and sorted my life out I knew I wanted to be a volunteer and give a little bit back to society because I received so much help when I was at my lowest.

As a volunteer with Groundswell there’s no stress, no deadlines, and no targets, I can choose what I do and when I do it.

I’ve always received great support from the managers and volunteers I think we work really well together. We bounce ideas off one another, we have a say in what is going on and how we will move forward.

My only criticism is that face to face meetings aren’t often enough, but I understand it’s geographically awkward. Also it would be great if there was a voucher system for some of the people we interview as a thank you.

I'm Karen from Manchester it's great to meet you all. I'm a recovering alcoholic,
I experienced a short time of homelessness many years ago, I'm a survivor of domestic abuse and I'm happy to say I've come through it all.
I volunteered at a local Alcohol and Substance Abuse centre where I qualified as a Peer Mentor.
I now care for my elderly dad who is housebound and I feel blessed to be able and well enough to do this.
I hope as part of this Community Reporting team our stories can contribute to making a difference to homelessness and health inequalities and shine a light on any other injustices we come across.

  1. A big part of recovery be it alcohol or drugs is feeling that sense of purpose or belonging.volunteering has been a big part of my recovery both with groundswell and a local recovery agency. I’m helping people in recovery through personal training helping people reach there goals which helps me stay focused on mine.
    Thanks for sharing Karen 😀👍
