Stigma

Somehow, some people think, just because you’ve been homeless, you are not due the respect or common decency shown to everybody else. You can get yourself back on track, but some people don’t treat you in the same way, regardless of how good or successful your life was.

Even some with the best intentions in the world, talk or refer to ex-homeless as a different species or not on the same standing as the rest of the upright citizens – the under species of this world.

I think what got my goat on this occasion, is the presumption that just because a person has been homeless and is now living independently, he doesn’t have the right to govern who turns up on his doorstep and expect entry to his home, no matter whether or not he knows the person, he should just except it.

I know most ‘normal’ people wouldn’t let someone they hardly know in and talk about personal matters with them, but because you’re ex-homeless the presumption is you should. It’s bollocks.
