National Squirrel Day

Some of you may not know, but it’s National Squirrel Day on the 21st of January, and now you’re wondering why the hell I want to let you know, why it’s relevant to the Listen Up! project.

Joking aside, we all know that while ‘awareness days’ are set aside for some fab causes, some are virtue causes to make people feel good about themselves.

So, awareness is vital for many things, but highlighting something for 24 hours doesn’t exactly support real changes needed, does it? You decide.

Dry January isn’t for people who are alcohol dependent, nor is breaking New Year resolutions by the second week of the year because you find it a bit difficult and are able to revert back to your old patterns.

Having a ‘landlords day’ might highlight some scandalous practice by the few, but doesn’t help a desperate tenant fix their accommodation.

Let’s have a ‘GOVERNMENT day’, maybe even a ‘lifestyle choice day‘… actually, every day is a government day according to the full range of media, social or not.

Children in Need highlights great things and raises vital funds, but who donates the other 364 days, a handful of truly kind generous people I suspect.

Comic Relief, the same, although we’re grateful to Prince William for his contributions to our podcast on tackling homelessness earlier this year – more on that hopefully to report in 2024.

Movember is one that doesn’t require people to stubble round in their pockets for cash, so embrace ya tash, bring out ya best hairy version of yourself 🙉

My final thought, let’s have a ‘do an act of kindness without telling anyone YEAR’ eh!

So, my final ask, please, remember to squirrel away your excess Xmas nuts into a basket by your chair, ready for sharing on the 21st January with our friends the squirrels 🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️

Kind regards

Miles (🥜 Squirrel Nutkin 🥜)
