Now it’s fair to say I’m no accountant, but I can use a calculator, I think.
This piece is on the Government making savings from the public purse, quite right to do, but I have a simple calculation that doesn’t seem to make savings, or sense, to me.
Let’s assume there’s 12 million pensioners (current figures) who legally(!) are invited to check whether they’re eligible for claiming pension credit given the changes to winter fuel allowance.
Let’s assume it takes a civil servant ten hours per check at an hourly rate of say £25 (inclusive of all employer’s costs).
So we have £25 x 10 = £250 per check ✔️
£250 x 12 million= £3 billion ✔️
To save a reported £1.4 billion👁️🗨️
Does that make sense to you?
Me neither. Over to the public servants to explain me thinks.
