Substance Use

It is a change of an era. After walking through the streets, since the lockdown started. The main change is people don’t carry any change now. They don’t carry money. Homeless community have always relied on people carrying money. Call a life style or to live style. The cost of alcohol, has stayed about the same. The cost of all types of drugs has gone up. The loss of revenue means, do I eat or do I score. I leave you to guess which one wins.
After talking with many people in the area. It seems that petty crime is on the increase (windows left open because of the hot weather). Plus reports of rooms being broken into at hostel, supported living accommodation and having their methadone stolen. I can’t confirm this last part, because I can not get access to these places at the moment, because of lockdown. But it is the talk of the streets.

The other fact to look out for,  does crime increase when begging stops? The one thing for certain is, the health of these people will get worse. Whether that’s through hunger or through withdrawal. Self care, will fall away.
