Hello everyone, it’s John Chiko. So today I will be talking about why I believe that education is empowerment. Education is imperative for the functionality of society, it is how we prepare people for all critical jobs and roles in society, it is how we prepare people to follow laws and regulations that need to be followed and enforced to operate a safe and lawful society. I also believe that education is one of the greatest ways of promoting equality, be it gender, social or racial equality. This is because access to education opens the doors to opportunities, and educated people are usually those that find solutions to society.  The following are things I believe can improve if education is made accessible.

Economic Development

Accessible education provides individuals with the knowledge, skills, and expertise required for various jobs and industries. A well-educated and skilled workforce is essential for economic activities that rely on specialised knowledge, technology, and innovation. This means that high-quality, accessible education can be life changing for a community, region, and nation as it provides opportunities and solutions for people.

Education enhances productivity by equipping individuals with efficient work habits, problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt to changing technologies. A more educated workforce can contribute to higher levels of output and efficiency in various sectors.

Reduced Poverty

Accessible education provides opportunities for individuals from low-income families to break the cycle of generational poverty. When children have access to quality education, they are more likely to achieve better socio-economic outcomes than their parents. Education fosters an entrepreneurial mindset and provides individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to start and manage businesses. Entrepreneurship can be a pathway out of poverty, as it creates job opportunities and stimulates economic growth.

Education often includes elements of financial literacy. This knowledge helps individuals make informed decisions about budgeting, savings, and investments, reducing the likelihood of falling into financial distress.

Community Cohesion

Education exposes individuals to a variety of ideas, cultures, and perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for diversity. This shared cultural understanding helps create a more cohesive and tolerant community. Accessible education provides opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to interact, collaborate, and form social bonds. This social integration helps break down barriers and promotes a sense of unity within the community.

Accessible education systems create inclusive learning environments that accommodate individuals from different socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. This inclusivity promotes a sense of belonging and shared purpose among students.

Healthier Communities

Accessible education includes health education, providing individuals with knowledge about nutrition, hygiene, preventive healthcare, and overall wellbeing. This knowledge empowers individuals to make informed choices for a healthier lifestyle. Education is a key tool in preventing the spread of diseases. Access to information about vaccinations, hygiene practices, and disease prevention strategies helps communities maintain better health and reduces the risk of outbreaks.

Education contributes to awareness and understanding of mental health issues. Accessible education helps reduce the stigma associated with mental health, promoting open conversations, and fostering supportive communities.

Social Mobility

Accessible education facilitates the development of professional and educational networks. These networks can be instrumental in providing opportunities for mentorship, internships, and career advancement, helping individuals climb the socio-economic ladder. Education equips individuals with the skills and knowledge needed for economic mobility. By gaining qualifications and expertise, individuals can pursue higher-paying jobs and access professions that offer upward mobility.

Accessible education helps break down barriers to entry in leadership roles. When individuals from diverse backgrounds have access to quality education, they are more likely to ascend to leadership positions in various sectors, contributing to a more inclusive society.

Crime Reduction

Educational programs often include social and emotional learning components, teaching students skills such as conflict resolution, empathy, and communication. These skills contribute to positive behaviour and reduce the likelihood of engaging in criminal activities. Accessible education is a key factor in preventing juvenile delinquency. Providing educational opportunities and support systems helps steer young individuals away from a path that may lead to criminal behaviour.

Education enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Individuals with these skills are better equipped to navigate challenges, make positive decisions, and avoid engaging in criminal behaviour.

Cultural Enrichment

Accessible education includes arts education, exposing students to various forms of creative expression such as visual arts, music, dance, and theatre. This exposure enhances cultural literacy and fosters an appreciation for artistic diversity. Educational programs that include literature and humanities studies expose students to classic and contemporary works from different cultures. This broadens their understanding of human experiences, fostering cultural richness.

Education that promotes multilingualism enhances cultural enrichment by preserving and celebrating linguistic diversity. Learning multiple languages allows individuals to engage with a broader range of cultural texts and perspectives.

Global Competitiveness

Education provides individuals with technological literacy, ensuring that they are proficient in utilising and adapting to new technologies. This is crucial for industries and economies seeking to remain competitive on a global scale. Accessible education fosters innovation and creativity by encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and a spirit of inquiry. Innovative individuals contribute to the development of new ideas, products, and services, enhancing global competitiveness.

Accessible education facilitates global networking opportunities, connecting individuals with professionals, mentors, and resources worldwide. These connections enhance career opportunities and contribute to global competitiveness.

Conclusion

There are many advantages that providing accessible education can bring to a society. It can completely change a society as it gives people the knowledge to find solutions to their problems. It allows them to be more self-aware about themselves, their environment, and the functionalities of the world. To put it simply, it provides an opportunity for change.

Hello everyone, my name is John Chikondewa Mpaso and I am 29 years old. I am from Harare, Zimbabwe and I have lived in England for 19 years now. Ever since moving to England in 2004, I have lived in Coventry, where I attended Secondary School and Sixth Form at Lyng Hall School. Currently I am an Outreach Officer for an organisation called ININI which focuses on providing mental health services to Migrant and Local Communities. I am also Commitee Secretary for an organisation called CARAG (Coventry Asylum Refugee Action Group), which specialises in providing a range of services for Migrants and Refugees living in Coventry and the West Midlands. I become involved with ListenUp!, through a recommendation by the previous Commitee Chair of CARAG Lorraine Mponela, who shared with the group the opportunity to become a Volunteer Community Journalist for Groundswell, who would be able to capture the stories, thoughts and ideas of people who are experiencing homelessness within the areas they are a living in. Due to my own experience with homelessness and that of the people that I work with and know personally, I believed that I was in the position to capture real life stories, real time that can legitimately describe the various issues that cause homelessness to the people that live in Coventry. I believe that it is my duty to tell the real story of the homeless crisis that is being faced by the people of Coventry, both migrant and native, as I hear and see their stories play out everyday and I believe that it is on fact on one big story, that needs to be shared with the world, so that we all may truly understand the true causes of homelessness, including the many dangers and hardship that it brings forth to the people that are experiencing it. The people that I work with are my biggest inspiration, as they come in many forms like colleagues, friends and family, which has shown me that what makes humanity one, is our thoughts and feelings. It is our actions and what we do for humanity that will truly create a change, and it is up to us to take on that responsibility. It's time to Listen Up! and Make a change.
